讲述凯特在阿富汗战争中失去了丈夫，她在经营志愿消防队的同时，还要和女儿努力保护自己在小镇上的农场。一个士兵闯入了凯特的生活，他来兑现对凯特丈夫的承诺，将他最好的朋友——一只叫作达科塔的战斗犬带回家。达科塔很快适应了农场的生活，从一幢燃烧的建筑物中救出一名妇女后，成为了当地的英雄。当地治安官对凯特宝贵的农场土地进行了规划，并一直指望她卖掉这块土地，为了得到那块土地，他将不择手段。在士兵、女儿和达科塔的帮助下，凯特将认识到家庭农场的真正价值，以及最重要的友谊。
